After You Have Your Marriage License

The license is not valid until three days after issuance unless a waiver is purchased. It remains valid for 60 days and may be used anywhere in Oregon. It must be returned to the same county where it was issued.

Two witnesses over age 18 are required at the ceremony.

If unused, the license expires 60 days from the effective date. No extensions, refunds, or exceptions.

Oregon law requires the properly completed original license to be returned to the Clerk’s Office within 5 days of the marriage. If the couple does not return it, the officiant must do so.

Once returned and signed by the local official, the license becomes the official record of marriage. If certified copies were not purchased at the time of application, contact the County Clerk’s Office .
